Probably William Atkinson, circa 1820. Classical, 2-storey

small mansion house. All pink ashlar; mostly sash windows

with 12-pane glazing. Principal north and south elevations

are treated differently, but each has symmetrical front, with

bays at east recessed/stepped down. North (entrance)

elevation 3-bays, narrow inner bay recessed, with roof

carried over, round-headed doorway wide 2-leaf door and

small-pane fanlight probably not original. South elevation 5

bays with additions to east, inner bay advanced and

pedimented with steps to tripartite (?former door) at ground

in shallow segmental-arched panel; ground floor north west

room (drawing room) has canted window either elevation

inserted circa 1860. West elevation 3 bays; low wing and

court to east. Continuous 1st floor cill band; cornice;

stacks with block cornices; slated roofs, mostly piended,

with platform.

Statement of Special Interest

Formerly used by Drumlanrig estate factor.

Plans of circa 1860, 1882 and 1944 all presumably indicate

work was done then.

Conceivably, Atkinson provided the north front by deepening

and enlarging an earlier house the style of whose south front

suggests the hand of James Playfair

Listing covers both the exterior and the interior and any object or structure fixed to the building. Listing can also cover structures not physically attached but which are part of the curtilage of the building, such as boundary walls, gates, gatepiers, ancillary buildings etc. The planning authority is responsible for advising on what is covered by the listing including the curtilage of a listed building. Since 1 October 2015 we have been able to exclude items from a listing. If part of a building is not listed, it will say that it is excluded in the statutory address and in the statement of special interest in the listed building record. The statement will use the word 'excluding' and quote the relevant section of the Historic Environment Scotland Act 2014. Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect current legislation.
